Aloha to the big lsland community,

The problem is the county or the estate are like the dog with the two heads, they want it all but they can't eat it all at once.
In 200 acres are enough land whre the developer can do, regarless who, anything that they desire. They can also include a public swimming pool, the one downtown is always full the max, also Kealekehe High School needs a swimming pool to fight growing obesity among the students.
Who ever develops that needs to take in acount the missing conection in the mentioned four schools nearby. only buses are allowed to use it, how people from the mauka side are going to access the park or what ever get build?
I support your group, but you need to include the golf course and a simming pool. Not everybody have access to the private resorts or fancy country clubs.
I am sorry for my harshness, but you KA2020 can do it,please built what you want, but include the golf course and the pool.
Lets hire a private company to manage the grounds, too.

I would like to see the photos on the website enlarged. It's very difficult to see the photos on my monitor . It's not hyperlinked to a "larger image" site. The concept is great and I would like to see this project be self-sufficient and sustainable. Should strive higher than a LEED, silver status. The largest issue is traffic. More connector roads need to be built before this 200-acre cultural park would ultimately benefit the community. Please consider what is there now. Mahalo, for your expertise in organizing this venture.
As I stated above, posted by joseph in error...Of course traffic, is the main issue. What plans do you have to mitigate the negative consequence of traffic on Queen Kaahumanu? This project will no doubt have a serious impact.
One of the components of the park being consider is a residential component...we envision this "opportunity" residential component to house teachers, county emplyees. locals etc. The ability to house the community in proximity to their work could reduce the "trips" and distances driven.
The sustainable component vision which would link the water treatment to the park as well as utilzing the landfill resources will undoubtably create a platium LEED rating for the regional park.
the concerns of concurrentcy in respect to infrastructures surrounding the park are definetly important to consider in regards to this proposal.
On behalf of the KA 2020 Board of Directors and myself, Mahalo for sharing your thoughts and suggestions regarding the proposed KA 2020 'community' development "Cultural Park" they are very important to KA 2020.
In the early part of the new year (2007) KA 2020 is planning to invite the community to a KA 2020 sponsored commmunity design session to get design and proposed activityl input on cultural park.
If members of the community are interested in participating in this effort sooner, please feel free to contact me via e-mail (kawika@ka2020.org) and we can explore on we can collaborate on putting this project on the ground and real.

Aloha,
I am very excited about the idea of having this for our community. It's been a dream of mine for quite some time to be a part of any endeavor which would provide a cultural arts and music venue for the people of the island. I do, however; have considerable apprehension with regard to the infrastructure, or lack thereof, to support this venture.
May I suggest that part of the planning process include a concurrent transportation plan, which is something West Hawaii desperately needs. In addition, now is the time to secure more connector roads between the upper and lower roads. There should be some extensive thought given to a transit system of some sort to support not only this project but ALL the new popluation of people arriving daily.
Please count me in on this process!! I would like to volunteer my time and effort right now towards the fruition of this project.
Mahalo Nui Loa,
Connie Fairbanks
I opened by issue of the Chamber of Commerce newsletter to see a paid advertisement made to look like a news article included for this project.
Make no mistake, folks, just at Kawena explains above, this is a residential and commercial development project -- its true nature is being hidden somewhat so the community doesn't see this for what it will eventually become.
-- The planners say "positive feedback" has been received from county and state officials. Who, exactly? They don't quote anyone, or list anybody by name. Except themselves, of course.
-- What makes these people think 400,000 people are going to visit a botanical garden and hiking trails, when that many people don't visit the gardens and trails that already exist on the island?
-- Ongoing support and maintenance of the facilities is going to cost 8-10 percent of construction costs. Who is expected to pay for that? The residential and commercial tenants?
-- Project proponents say this project is gaining interest on the mainland. Ask yourself why! The money from the hiking trails and botanical gardens will just break-even -- just ask anyone who works at a cultural site or garden now and they'll tell you they don't make the money they need to pay working wages for their employees.
As the year comes to an end your comments encouraged me to consider the effects and benefits of this “development” once again. After I read the above comments I was persuaded to revisit the booklet (or website) and the design goals envisioned for these lands. To date the design goals have been structured by students and various community members, we will be requesting further community collaboration in 2007.
Ultimately our design goals for the Hualalai Cultural Center and Park is to nurture and work with the community in creating a new paradigm in land use planning for the island.
The design goal of this development embodies the opportunity to create inclusion for “all people of the Island”. Our aspirations are for the people to “see” the benefits provided and foster public support. We are asking for public unity in creating a truly successful “sustainable development”. We look forward to the Hawaiian people stepping forward and collaborating together on this project.
The land use philosophy calls for a holistic village that will support itself and the community at large. Therefore a mix of uses supporting each other are being proposed. Please note: The residential element is one that will house teachers, local workforce, county employees, elders, etc.
Management and maintenance will be carefully structured as part of the collaborative plan for this living village.
Some of the project’s energy goals are the following: Utilizing the adjacent wastewater and landfill resources in creating a rich and natural landscape garden for the entire site. Less reliance on fossil fuels, therefore all buildings will be constructed with less material than typically used (yet structured to withstand earthquake forces), and sited appropriately in guiding prevailing winds through them as well as sheltering and shading themselves from the overhead sun. No air-conditioning will be required or proposed for any facilities. The amphitheater will be laid into the lava and sheltered overhead with “umbrella banners”. The gardens around the amphitheatre will also provide a cooling effect.
Sustainable transportation goals could include electric powered buses to and from resorts and town as well as timing events to reduce traffic impacts. Having a mix of uses will also cut down on the daily auto trips (i.e. the residences can shop at the retail uses/ or simply enjoy their community gardens for fresh produce).
There is so much more to consider. But above all is the underlying principle that each “component” of the park is intended for “everyone’s use”...from there we feel we can create a “place for all”..
Thanks again for your reminder for me to revisit the visions created in 2006 for this land.
